W&B TELEVISION AND TURBINE STUDIOS TO PRODUCE BEATLES BIOPIC SERIES “HAMBURG DAYS” FOR AGC TELEVISION, ZDF AND THE BBC
Los Angeles/Munich December 3, 2025 – AGC Television, German broadcaster ZDF and the BBC are teaming up to co-finance HAMBURG DAYS, a prestige drama series based on the Klaus Voormann’s autobiography about The Beatles’ early days as a band. W&B Television (a LEONINE Company) and Turbine Studios will produce. Benjamin Benedict, Quirin Berg and Max Wiedemann of W&B Television, Andrew Eaton and Justin Thomson of Turbine Studios and AGC’s Stuart Ford, Lourdes Diaz and Miguel A. Palos Jr. will act as Executive Producers. Isabel Haug of W&B Television serves as a creative producer. At ZDF, the project is overseen by Frank Zervos, Caroline von Senden, and Alexandra Staib. The BBC has acquired the series for BBC One and BBC iPlayer. The series production is supported by MOIN Film Fund Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein.
The series has begun casting and will start production in the Spring of 2026 in Hamburg and Liverpool. HAMBURG DAYS was developed by Benjamin Benedict (“Generation War”) and Jamie Carragher (“Succession”) serves as the head writer for the six-part series. Christian Schwochow (“The Crown”), one of Germany’s most successful directors and renowned for the TV film “German History X” (W&B Television), which won Best Series at Series Mania, is adached as the showrunner. British director Mat Whitecross, renowned for his acclaimed collaborations with Coldplay (“Coldplay: A Head Full of Dreams”) and Oasis (“Oasis: Supersonic”), and recipient of the Silver Bear for his documentary “The Road to Guantanamo,” is set to direct. The show’s music will be curated by producer and BAFTA -winner David Holmes (Killing Eve, Ocean’s franchise). Klaus Voormann is an exclusive consultant to the show.
Set in the 1960s, in the smoke-filled clubs of Hamburg’s St. Pauli red-light district, an inexperienced young rock ‘n’ roll band from Liverpool collide with two young artists, Klaus Voormann and Astrid Kirchherr. Together they help spark a transformation that turns a scrappy group of teenagers into the greatest music phenomenon the world has ever known: The Beatles.
AGC International will handle worldwide sales outside the UK (BBC) and Germany (ZDF).
Christian Schwochow made his English language debut directing episodes of the third and fikh season of the Nellix series “The Crown”. He became the Lead-Director and Executive Producer of season 6, directing the episodes for which Elizabeth Debicki won her Golden Globe. His other directing credits include the highly acclaimed Nellix film “Munich: The Edge of War” (Turbine Studios) as well as the award-winning German series “Bad Banks”. Schwochow has just finished filming the Apple TV series “The Dispatcher” (60Forty Films) for which he directed all episodes and serves as an Executive Producer.

Die Idee zur sechsteiligen Serie, die in Hamburg und Liverpool spielt, stammt von Benjamin Benedict („Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter“), die Drehbücher verantwortet Jamie Carragher („Succession”) als Headautor. Christian Schwochow (“The Crown”) wird als Showrunner HAMBURG DAYS leiten, Mat Whitecross (“Oasis: Supersonic”) übernimmt die Regie. Für die musikalische Gestaltung sorgt der renommierte Produzent und BAFTA-Preisträger David Holmes („Killing Eve“, „Oceans“-Reihe). Das Casting in Großbritannien hat bereits begonnen.

Die Serie basiert auf der Autobiografie „Warum spielst du Imagine nicht auf dem weißen Klavier, John?“: Erinnerungen an die Beatles und viele andere Freunde von Klaus Voormann, der auch als exklusiver Berater fungiert: „Ich wurde in Berlin geboren, aber mein Herz gehört Hamburg. Sowohl meine Tätigkeit als Bassist, als auch meine grafische Karriere – beides hat seinen Ursprung in dieser Stadt. Und so berührt es mich sehr, dass in einer Serie mit entsprechend erzählerischem Raum meine spannenden und prägenden Hamburg Days und die meiner Freunde wieder zum Leben erweckt werden.“
HAMBURG DAYS spielt Anfang der 1960er Jahre: In St. Pauli pulsiert das Nachtleben und die verrauchten Bars auf dem Kiez ziehen Matrosen, Künstler und Kleinkriminelle gleichermaßen magisch an. In den Clubs des berühmt berüchtigten Rotlichtviertels entwickelt sich zu dieser Zeit eine neue Musik-Szene und so manche Band träumt hier vom großen Durchbruch. Auch das junge Künstlerpaar Klaus und Astrid taucht in diese faszinierende und ihnen bisher unbekannte Welt ein. Als sie eines Abends einer chaotischen Band aus Liverpool begegnen und sich mit den Musikern anfreunden, ahnt noch keiner von ihnen, dass sie schon bald gemeinsam
den Stein ins Rollen bringen, der aus dieser unbekannten Kneipen-Band das größte Musikphänomen aller Zeiten machen wird: die Beatles.

Er feierte u.a. mit seiner Beteiligung an der Netflix-Produktion „The Crown“, einer der meistprämierten Serien der letzten Jahre, dem Netflix-Film „München: Im Angesicht des Krieges“ (Turbine Studios), der preisgekrönten Serie „Bad Banks”, dem Fernsehfilm „Bornholmer Straße” sowie dem vielfach ausgezeichneten Film „Mitten in Deutschland: NSU – Die Täter” (W&B Television) große Erfolge.
